15 communities across Kano's Dawakin Tofa LGA had lived without grid power for decades. National grid extension was projected to cost ₦8.4 billion and take 11 years. Local solar micro-grid proposals kept failing due to poor load forecasting and mismatched battery capacity.

Methodology

SE approach applied

Multi-criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) to evaluate electrification options. Energy demand modelling based on household surveys. Systems architecture for hybrid solar-diesel micro-grids with smart metering. Stakeholder mapping to ensure maintenance responsibility was clearly assigned.

Outcome

Impact & results

15 communities electrified within 18 months at ₦1.2 billion — an 86% cost reduction from grid extension estimates. 2,800 households connected. A replication framework now guides the state rural energy programme covering 40 additional communities.
